Dance photography on stage, or in rehearsals etc results in imagery that is documentary and often candid. However it depends on the stage lighting of the production, and choreography usually dictates that there is only one chance to capture a particular instant of movement or pose. Bespoke studio shoots on the other hand provide an opportunity for a more planned approach on the part of the collaborators. There is more control over lighting for the photographer, and movements can be repeated by the dancer to capture exactly the right moment or pose.
Many thanks to the dancers who collaborated to make these images: Mahisha Mayurathan and Jellisha Pracy Prabhu at LCM Studios Middlesbrough; Adriella Periera at Hartlepool Library (for Black British Ballet workshops); Students at Middlesbrough College; Amelia Leone at Saltburn Earthbeat Centre; Kristin Kelly Abbott at Saltburn Arts Centre; Annabel Livesey, Alyssa Lisle and Tom Sutton, Sophia Mendoza and Sami Hogg at LCM Studios; Zoobin Surty at Saltburn Earthbeat Centre.
